To replace a coolant temperature sensor, start by allowing the engine to cool down and then slowly remove the radiator cap to release the pressure in the cooling system. If a new sensor is being fitted, there is no need to drain the system, but if the sensor will be left out for some time, a plug should be inserted to prevent coolant loss. Disconnect the sensor wiring plug and unscrew the sensor, making sure to recover the O-ring seal if applicable. When refitting, tighten the sensor securely and ensure the connector seal is in place before connecting the wiring. Finally, refill or top-up the cooling system as needed. It is important to note that all models have a temperature display warning light, with blue indicating a cold engine and red indicating a hot engine.

Non-toxic coolant is available at local auto parts stores. Although the coolant is non-toxic when fresh, proper disposal of used coolant is still required. First, drain the coolant. Next, disconnect the electrical connector from the sending unit. On four-cylinder models the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor also functions as the coolant temperature sending unit - it's located on the left (driver's) end of the cylinder head. The coolant temperature sending unit no. 2 on V6 engines is located in the water outlet at the passenger's side of the engine - use a deep socket to remove it (sensor no. 1 is threaded into the lower tank of the radiator). Using a deep socket or wrench, remove the sending unit. Install the new unit and tighten it securely. Do not use thread sealer as it may electrically insulate the sending unit. Reconnect the electrical connector, refill the cooling system, and check for coolant leakage and proper gauge function.

Drain the coolant and disconnect the wiring connector before using a deep socket or wrench to remove the unit.

Disconnect the electrical connector and carefully unscrew the sensor.

To replace the sensor, make sure the ignition key is off, drain approximately one gallon from the cooling system, wrap the threads of the new sensor with Teflon sealing tape, disconnect the electrical connector, and carefully unscrew the sensor. Installation is the reverse of removal, and the cooling system should be refilled.
