    Q:
How to replace the Brake Shoe on Toyota Matrix? Posted by Customer
    A:
Loosen the wheel lug nuts and raise the rear of the vehicle on jackstands. The first step is releasing the parking brake and removing the wheel. Brake cleaner should be applied before anything is removed, and then it should be allowed to dry. Remove the return spring by unhooking it from the adjuster lever, as well as disconnecting the brake adjuster lever from the stud at the top of the rear shoe. Take out the lower spring which is located between front and rear shoes. Depress hold-down spring, turn retainer 90 degrees, and let go. The front shoe keeps on being pulled away from adjuster mechanism as well as wheel cylinder while holding back adjuster mechanism. Spring end comes free of shoe when you twist shoe until it does so. To take off, remove other end of upper return spring with front shoe taken apart. Remove hold-down spring along with braking plate. Use pliers to remove clip that holds parking brake lever on a stud in back of rear shoe then remove rear shoe together with adjuster assembly from backing plate. In order to install new rear shoe, assemble parking brake lever so as to crimp C-washer closed. While positioning rear shoe guide hold-down pin through and secure it with hold-down cup/spring/outer cup over pin.Lubricate high-temperature grease for moving parts of adjust screw and install adjuster assembly to back part of shoe.Hook up into hole in back show when guiding one via front shoe. The above aligns top part of front show with that of an adjuster including slot in piston or wheel cylinder.Secure front show using hold down spring.Fit automatic adjustment lever together with upper cables for adjusting brakes.Install lower spring right between both shoes. Before installing drum check if there are any problems which would need resurfacing.Install brake drum onto axle flange then go ahead with wheel plus lug nuts.Put down vehicle finally tighten lug nuts to torque shown.Making forward and reverse stops, and operating parking brake plus adjusting brakes until pedal feels right.Check how the brakes operate before driving the vehicle.
