First of all, on four-cylinder engines, one belt powers the alternator, AC, and power steering. On V6 engines, one belt powers the crankshaft, alternator, and AC, and another drives the power steering pump. Inspect belts for damage and replace them if needed. Check belt tension with a gauge or by measuring deflection. For V6 engines, adjust the alternator/AC belt by loosening the pivot bolt and the power steering pump belt by loosening the adjustment bolt. When replacing, ensure new belts match old ones and are centered in the pulley grooves.

You can check the belt tension using a Nippondenso or Burroughs belt tension gauge. If these tools are not available, you can also use the rule of thumb method. The goal is to ensure proper tension in the belts.

There are two belts - one for the alternator and air conditioning compressor, and another for the power steering pump.

The belts can be inspected by opening the hood and using a flashlight to check for signs of separation, core damage, rib cracking or separation, fraying, glazing, or worn ribs.
