Locate the alternator attaching bolts, take out those bolts and set down the alternator in an efficient workstation. Removal of three nuts attached to the rear end cover, a nut and terminal insulator, and the rear end cover. Next, teh screws that secure the voltage regulator and the brush holder can be withdrawn after the removal of the rear end cover. Take off the brush holder and the regulator of the rear end frame. If only the regulator is involved, then fitting a new one, reassembling the alternator then fitting it on the engine should be done. If the brushes are being replaced, then, ensure that each brush is measured from the point where it is exposed to the outside and if the brush is shorter than the minimum exposed length all the brushes should be replaced. Make certain that each brush, slides easily in the brush holder. In fixing the brush holder, one has to press the brush on a small end of the screw driver to ensure that the shaft is free. Following this, secure the screws of the voltage regulator or the brush holder in the rear end frame. Fix the rear end cover and use three nut screws to tightly fit over the respective locations. Last of all, screws the terminal insulator and unto and again bolts the alternator onto its rightful place.

Before you can pull the alternator from the 1979 through 1983 models, take time to mark the alternator case so that you can be sure that you will be reassembling it in the right manner. Third, it is necessary to unbolt three through-bolts, and then sledge the rectifier end frame and stator away from the drive-end frame and the rotor using a screwdriver to detach the stator. Subsequently, it is necessary to pull out all the four nuts and the condenser together with both terminal insulators from the rectifier end frame without losing the insulator of the rectifier holder stud as well as the rubber cushion for the brush holder. Some of the necessary steps that have to be perform include desoldering of leads and removal of old brushes and springs from the respective brush holder should be done carefully avoiding application of excessive heat. Replace the new brushes and springs one at a time and make sure that the newly installed brush is of the required standard exposed length and then solder the leads. Avoid applying heat when soldering in the reassembly process, and while engaging the brushes with the holder, ensure that you force them in to ensure that they are trapped in place, a piece of wire can be used for trapping the brushes in place. Place the insulator on shown on posative,sided rectifier holder stud needing a rubber cushion on brushes, and also ensure that the wires do not touch the case when fixing the rectifier end frame. For 1984 and later models, removing the three retaining nuts and insulators and other procedures differ from the steps mentioned above, detached the brush holder and cover and check the exposed brush length and finally replace the brushes based on the procedure. Desolder and take out the brush and the spring and then pass the new brush lead through the brush holder with the new brush, then put the spring and then solder the leads to the contact terminal and adjust the exposed length correctly. Last but not the least, fit in the brush holder and new brushes at the rotor shaft and measure the clearance by tightening the cover screws in accordance with the necessity of the job and then reverse the process.

Remove the alternator and place it on a clean workbench.

Once the rear cover is removed, remove the five screws that retain the voltage regulator and the brush holder. Remove the brush holder and the regulator from the rear end frame.
