    Q:
What are the steps for removing components in the 2005 Toyota Prius? Posted by Customer
    A:
    1. Remove the drivebelt. 2. Unbolt the brake fluid reservoir and secure it out of the way (do not disconnect the hoses). Remove the reservoir bracket. 3. Remove the valve cover. 4. With the parking brake applied and the shifter in Park, loosen the lug nuts from the right front wheel, then raise the front of the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Remove the right front wheel. 5. On 2001 through 2003 models, remove the right-hand engine bottom cover. On 2004 and later models, remove the right and center engine bottom covers. 6. Drain the cooling system. 7. Remove the air cleaner intake. 8. Remove the windshield washer reservoir. 9. Remove the water pump. 10. Disconnect and label the wiring connectors for the various sensors and controllers that interfere with timing chain cover removal. 11. Remove the vacuum switching valve from the engine mount. 12. Put a block of wood on top of a floor jack and put the jack under the oil pan. Jack the engine up just enough to take some weight off of the engine mounts. Remove the engine mount and the engine mount bracket. On later models, remove the engine mount spacer. 13. Remove the crankshaft position sensor. 14. Remove the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly. 15. Position the number one piston at TDC on the compression stroke. Confirm the engine is at TDC on the compression stroke. 16. Remove the crankshaft pulley/vibration damper, being careful not to rotate the engine from TDC. If the engine rotates off TDC during this step, reposition the engine back to TDC before proceeding. The engine should be left at TDC for the No. 1 piston during this entire procedure. 17. Remove the timing chain cover fasteners and pry the cover off the engine. 18. There are two O-rings that must be removed and replaced. 19. Remove the timing chain tensioner as follows: Lift the lever and push the plunger in. Lower the lever. Insert a small rod into the lever hole to lock the lever in position. Unbolt the tensioner and remove it. 20. Remove the timing chain tensioner slipper and the damper. 21. Lift the timing chain off the camshaft sprockets and remove the timing chain and the crankshaft sprocket as an assembly from the engine. The crankshaft sprocket should slip off the crankshaft by hand. If not, use several flat-bladed screwdrivers to evenly pry the sprocket off the crankshaft. Note: If you intend to reuse the timing chain, use white paint or chalk to make a mark indicating the front of the chain. If a used timing chain is reinstalled with the wear pattern in the opposite direction, noise and increased wear may occur.
