Prepare tools and disconnect the battery's negative terminal. Remove the drive belt, alternator, valve cover, ABS actuator, right front wheel, and drain the cooling system. Position the number one piston at TDC, aligning the timing marks. Remove the crankshaft pulley/vibration damper, passenger-side engine mount, drive belt tensioner, and crankshaft position sensor. Remove the oil pan, main wiring harness junction, and timing chain tensioner. Inspect all components for wear. Clean the timing chain cover and apply RTV sealant. Reset the timing chain tensioner to its "zero" position, lubricate the O-ring, and install it. Reinstall the crankshaft pulley/vibration damper and set the chain tension. Confirm TDC alignment and tighten the timing chain cover fasteners before proceeding with the reinstallation process in reverse.

Disconnect the battery and remove the coolant overflow, washer tanks, and front brace on Solara models. Remove belts from the alternator and power steering pump. Loosen lug nuts on the right front wheel, then raise the vehicle and remove the wheel, fender apron, and spark plugs. Set the number one cylinder at TDC and support the engine. Remove the engine movement control rod, upper timing belt cover, tensioner, and belt. Remove the lower cover, belt guide, and belt. For installation, clean the belt area and align the crankshaft sprocket keyway. Apply thread-lock to the lower idler pulley bolt, position the idler pulley, and install the belt. Attach the lower cover and fit the crankshaft pulley. Reinstall the upper idler pulley and front camshaft sprocket.

The initial steps include removing the engine/transaxle assembly, the drivebelt, including the drive-belt tensioner and idler pulleys, and setting the engine to TDC (Top Dead Center).

The manufacturer recommends removing the engine and transaxle assembly.

Apply a bead of RTV sealant to the timing chain cover sealing surfaces.

The system components include the Powertrain Control Module (PCM), the WT oil control valve (OCV), the WT oil control valve filter, and the intake camshaft sprocket actuator assembly.

Ensure the TDC marks on the camshaft sprockets are still in alignment.

The initial steps include draining the engine oil and removing the auxiliary drivebelt, cylinder head cover, and spark plugs.

1. Ensure that the camshafts are positioned with the dowel pins at the top in the 12 o'clock position. Install both camshaft sprockets in their original locations by aligning the dowel pin hole on the rear of the sprockets with the dowel pin on the camshaft. 2. Apply medium strength thread locking compound to the camshaft sprocket bolt threads and make sure the washers are in place. Hold the camshaft from turning and tighten the bolts. 3. Be very careful to avoid having the pistons contact the valves. If you feel any resistance while turning the crankshaft or the camshafts, stop and make certain there is no interference between the valves and pistons before proceeding. 4. If the timing components get moved during this procedure, set the timing mark on the crankshaft at 40-degrees clockwise from Top Dead Center. 5. Position the timing marks for both camshafts at 20-degrees clockwise from Top Dead Center. 6. Turn the crankshaft counterclockwise to position it at 20-degrees past Top Dead Center. 7. Install the stationary timing chain guide. 8. Loop the timing chain around the crankshaft sprocket and align the No.1 colored link with the mark on the crankshaft sprocket. Install the chain and crankshaft sprocket as an assembly on the engine. 9. Slip the timing chain into the lip of the stationary timing chain guide and over the intake camshaft sprocket, then around the exhaust camshaft sprocket, making sure to align the remaining two colored links with the marks on the camshaft sprockets. 10. Use one hand to remove the slack from the left side of the chain and install the timing chain tensioner pivot arm/chain guide. 11. Reconfirm that the number one piston is still at TDC on the compression stroke and that the timing marks on the crankshaft and camshaft sprockets are aligned with the colored links on the chain. 12. Apply a bead of RTV sealant to the timing chain cover sealing surfaces. Place the timing chain cover in position on the engine and install the bolts in their original locations. Tighten the bolts evenly in several steps.

While the No. 1 timing chain is removed, DO NOT ROTATE THE CRANKSHAFT!

Remove slack from the left side of the chain and install the timing chain tensioner pivot arm/chain guide.

Apply 14 psi of air pressure to the advance side oil port and attempt to rotate the actuator assembly by hand. It should rotate approximately 30 degrees counterclockwise from the locked position without binding.

- A problem in the VVT oil control valve circuit will set a diagnostic trouble code and turn on the Check Engine light. - Regular oil and filter changes are necessary for trouble-free operation. - Some checks require removal of the valve cover and other components.

The lower timing belt cover is removed along with the timing belt guide. During inspection, the idler pulleys, spring, and timing belt are checked for wear, damage, or cracks.

Remove the no. 1 idler pulley and plate washer using an Allen wrench.

After supporting the engine, the right-hand engine mounting, water pump pulley, and water pump should be removed.
