Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the auxiliary 12-volt battery, ensuring to perform the initialization procedure upon reconnection. Aim the front wheels straight ahead, then pass the seat belt through the steering wheel and click it into its latch to prevent movement while removing the Rack And Pinion, which could damage the airbag clockspring. Raise the vehicle and securely support it on jackstands before removing the front wheels and engine bottom covers. Disconnect the tie-rod ends from the steering knuckles. For 2001 through 2003 models, disconnect the stabilizer bar from the end links, lower control arms from the ball joints, and the wiring and EMPS bracket. Make match marks on the steering shaft joint, remove the bolt, and disconnect the intermediate steering shaft from the control valve shaft. Disconnect the engine torque rod from the crossmember, then place a floor jack with a block of wood under the crossmember, remove the mounting bolts, and carefully lower the assembly. Remove the stabilizer bar, unbolt the Rack And Pinion from the crossmember, and lift it off. For 2004 through 2009 models, remove both stabilizer bar links and the fasteners securing the stabilizer bar brackets. Slide the steering column cover up, paint match marks on the steering shaft and joint, then disconnect the intermediate shaft. Remove the four Rack And Pinion mounting bolts and slide the gear out the driver's side. For 2010 and later models, pull back the carpet and remove the cover from the steering column hole in the firewall, paint match marks on the steering shaft and U-joint, remove the bolt to separate the steering shaft, and detach both stabilizer bar links. Unbolt the ball joints from the control arms, remove the two bolts and engine mount brace, side reinforcement bars, and L-shape crossmember rear braces. Detach the wiring harness brackets from the suspension crossmember subassembly, remove the bolts and nuts to detach the rear engine mount, and support the suspension crossmember subassembly with a transmission jack or floor jack with a cradle before removing it. Finally, remove the Rack And Pinion from the suspension crossmember subassembly and paint match marks on the steering shaft and Rack And Pinion shaft if disconnecting them. Installation is the reverse of removal, ensuring to tighten all steering and suspension fasteners, install the wheels and lug nuts, lower the vehicle, and tighten the lug nuts.
