Before beginning this procedure, obtain a set of new cylinder head bolts. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal, drain the cooling system including the block, and remove the throttle body, fuel rails, and injectors. Remove the engine dipstick tube, thermostat housing, front and rear coolant passages, and the interfering front coolant pipe assembly. Remove the exhaust manifold(s), noting that the exhaust pipes can be disconnected to allow for removal with the cylinder heads if desired. Remove the alternator, intake manifold(s), and valve covers. For 2UZ-FE engines, remove the timing belt, camshaft sprockets, drivebelt idler pulley, and drivebelt tensioner, followed by the upper timing belt cover and camshaft(s) from the cylinder heads. For 1UR-FE, 3UR-FE, and 3UR-FBE engines, set the No. 1 cylinder to TDC on the compression stroke, then remove the timing chain cover, timing chains, sprocket, camshaft housing, and camshafts. Loosen the cylinder head bolts in 1/4-turn increments until they can be removed by hand, stuffing a rag into the oil drain hole to avoid dropping a head bolt washer. Lift the cylinder head off the engine block, using a wood block and hammer if necessary, and repeat for the other head. Ensure the mating surfaces of the cylinder heads and block are perfectly clean before installation, using a gasket scraper and brake system cleaner to remove all traces of carbon and old gasket material. Check the block and head mating surfaces for damage, using a file for slight damage and considering machining for excessive damage. Chase the threads in the cylinder head bolt holes with a tap of the correct size and clean the holes with compressed air. Position the new gaskets over the dowel pins in the block, carefully set the head on the block without disturbing the gasket, and apply a small amount of clean engine oil to the threads and washers of the new head bolts. Install the bolts and tighten them finger tight, then follow the recommended sequence to tighten the bolts to the specific torque. Mark the front of each bolt head with paint, and following the same sequence, tighten each bolt an additional 1/4-turn (90-degrees), then another 1/4-turn (90-degrees) until the paint marks are 180-degrees from the starting point. Repeat the entire procedure to install the other cylinder head, with the remaining installation steps being the reverse of removal. Finally, refill the cooling system, change the oil and filter, run the engine, and check for leaks.
