Before inspection, clean the piston/connecting rod assemblies and remove the original piston rings using a piston ring installation tool. Remove carbon from the piston top with a wire brush or fine emery cloth and use a groove-cleaning tool to remove carbon deposits from the ring grooves. Clean the assemblies with solvent and dry with compressed air. If the pistons and cylinder walls are undamaged, new pistons may not be necessary, but always use new piston rings when rebuilding an engine. Inspect each piston for cracks, scoring, holes, and burned areas. Measure the piston ring groove clearance and the piston-to-bore clearance. Check the piston-to-rod clearance for wear. If pistons must be removed, have the rods checked for bend and twist. Inspect the connecting rods for damage, inspect the rod and cap bearing surfaces, and replace old bearings if necessary.

The original bearing inserts should be replaced during connecting rod preparation.

The pistons and connecting rods are now ready for inspection and overhaul at an automotive machine shop.

Before removing the connecting rods, the endplay should be checked with feeler gauges. Feeler gauges should be slid between the first connecting rod and the crankshaft throw until the play is removed.

The piston/connecting rod assemblies must be cleaned, and the original piston rings must be removed from the pistons. It is important to always use new piston rings when reassembling the engine.

Clean the back side of the other bearing insert and install it in the rod cap, ensuring the tab fits into the recess and without applying any lubricant.

If the endplay exceeds the specified service limit, new connecting rods will be required. If new rods or a new crankshaft are installed, the endplay may fall under the service limit, and the rods will have to be machined to restore it.

If the oil clearance needs adjustment, investigate bearing insert size, cleanliness, and journal diameter.

The first step is to clean the piston/connecting rod assemblies and remove the original piston rings.

After removal, the connecting rod caps and bearing inserts should be reassembled in their respective connecting rods and the cap nuts should be installed finger tight. The pistons should not be separated from the connecting rods.

Before installation, clean the cylinder walls, chamfer the top edges of the cylinder bores, and ensure the crankshaft is in place. Remove the cap from the number one connecting rod, install new bearing inserts, and lubricate the bearing surfaces.
