    Q:
What are the key functions and maintenance procedures for axle shafts and CV joints on Toyota Corolla? Posted by Customer
    A:
This power is relayed to the wheels by means of a pair of axle shafts; the inner ends of which are splined on to the differential side gears while the outer ends are splined on to the axle hubs by the means of a large nut. The inner ends have constant velocity finger-sliding joints permitting delta and axial motions, the main components of which are the tripod bearing and the joint casing which in turn slides depending on the movement of the axle shaft in coordination with the wheel. Some of these joints can be unbolted for cleaning in case a boot is damaged but the damaged parts have to be replaced fully. When ordering parts be certain that some Corollas have Toyota manufactured axles, while some of them have axles from other suppliers. The outer CV joints have balls arranged between an inner race and an outer cage so that they can only move in angular motion and not in the axial direction. These can only be cleaned, inspected and repacked; they cannot be dismantled; if defective, it can only be replaced with the axle shaft as a complete assembly. It is therefore important to inspect the boots often for damage and leakage of lubricant; when the boots are torn they should be replaced to avoid joint damage. In many cases, boots are fitted to the axle shaft which means the boot will require replacement when the axle shaft is removed; however, it is possible to get split type of boots which can easily be replaced without the need of removing the axle shaft. Nevertheless, it is recommended to disassemble the axle shaft so that one can clean the CV joint, and eliminate any debris, which hastens wear out of the joints. Worn or damaged CV joints may present such symptoms as lubricant leakage, click at the time of making turns, clunk at the time of accelerating after coasting, and such vibrations while the car is at the highways. To check for wear, take each axle separately and rotate while holding the CV joint housings feeling for loose splines or a loose joint and visually inspect for cracks, dents and distortion on the axle shaft.

    Q:
What are the components and symptoms of worn or damaged CV joints and driveaxle shafts on Toyota Matrix? Posted by Customer
    A:
Power is transmitted from the transaxle to the wheels through a pair of axle shafts. The inner end of each axle shaft is splined into the differential side gears. The outer ends of the axle shafts are splined to the axle hubs and locked in place by a large nut. The inner ends of the axle shafts are equipped with sliding constant velocity joints, which are capable of both angular and axial motion. Each inner joint assembly consists of a tripod bearing and a joint housing (outer race) in which the joint is free to slide in and out as the axle shaft moves up and down with the wheel. The joints can be disassembled and cleaned in the event of a boot failure, but if any parts are damaged, the joints must be replaced as a unit. When buying parts for an axle shaft, or a complete replacement axle shaft assembly, make sure you get the correct components. The outer CV joints consist of ball bearings running between an inner race and an outer cage, and are capable of angular but not axial movement. The outer joints should be cleaned, inspected, and repacked, but they cannot be disassembled. If an outer joint is damaged, it must be replaced along with the axle shaft. The boots should be inspected periodically for damage and leaking lubricant. Torn CV joint boots must be replaced immediately or the joints can be damaged. Boot replacement involves removal of the axle shaft. The most common symptom of worn or damaged CV joints, besides lubricant leaks, is a clicking noise in turns, a clunk when accelerating after coasting, and vibration at highway speeds. To check for wear in the CV joints and axle shafts, grasp each axle (one at a time) and rotate it in both directions while holding the CV joint housings, feeling for play indicating worn splines or sloppy CV joints. Also check the axle shafts for cracks, dents, and distortion.
