On early 60 series vehicles, the heater core assembly can be removed without removing the instrument panel. Start by disconnecting the negative battery cable and draining the cooling system. Disconnect the heater hoses at the firewall and plug the heater core tubes. Remove the center console, glove compartment, radio, dash bezels, and instrument panel. Remove the heater/AC controls and ECM without disconnecting connectors. Loosen the nuts on the heater tube studs and carefully pull out the heater unit. Installation is the reverse of removal. Refill the cooling system, reconnect the battery, and check for leaks and system operation.
