How to replace oil seals in a Toyota Rav4?

To remove and replace wheel seals and speedometer drive gear oil seals, you can perform the repairs without removing the transaxle from the vehicle. Start by raising the vehicle and securely supporting it on jack stands. If you suspect a wheel seal is leaking, you'll notice lubricant on the side of the transaxle below the seal. Remove the wheel seal, and if you're working on a 4WD model and servicing the passenger's seal, also remove the transfer unit. Using a screwdriver or pry bar, carefully pry the oil seal out of the transaxle bore. In cases where the seal is stubborn, a special oil seal removal tool may be required. For installation, carefully install a new seal using a seal installer or large socket to a depth of -0.0197 to 0.0197 inches (-0.5 to 0.5 mm). Lubricate the lip of the new seal with multi-purpose grease and then install the wheel seal, ensuring no to damage the lip of the new seal in the process.
