Toyota Supra Brake Master Cylinder

Brake Master Cylinder is an essential part of braking system of Toyota Supra that translate foot force exerted by the driver into hydraulic pressure. This hydraulic pressure is then transferred to the slave cylinders that in turn clamps the brakes and this provides the friction needed to halt the vehicle. Generally the master cylinder comprises of pistons, seals, springs which are fixed in a cast iron of or aluminum body; the fluid chambers can either be integrally or detachable. The braking system in different models of Toyota Supra has included the use of dual circuit master cylinders whereby even if one circuit of the master cylinder fails to operate in providing the necessary force to stop the vehicle, the other is always available to do the job. This design improves safety because hydraulic failure does not result in the inability to operate this machine. Some of the problems associated with the Brake Master Cylinder include leakage of the fluid and internal problems which amount to poor braking system.

Toyota Supra Brake Master Cylinder Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to overhaul a master cylinder on Toyota Supra?
A: Before overhauling the Brake Master Cylinder, it is important to check the availability and cost of a new or factory-rebuilt unit, as well as the availability of a rebuild kit. To remove the Brake Master Cylinder, start by removing as much fluid as possible from the reservoir. Place rags under the line fittings and prepare caps or plastic bags to cover the ends of the lines once they are disconnected. Loosen the tube nuts at the ends of the Brake Lines using a flare-nut wrench. Pull the brake lines away from the Brake Master Cylinder slightly and plug the ends to prevent contamination. Disconnect the electrical connector and remove the four nuts attaching the Brake Master Cylinder to the power booster. Lift the Brake Master Cylinder out of the engine compartment, being careful not to spill any fluid. To overhaul the Brake Master Cylinder, obtain the proper rebuild kit and inspect the reservoir grommet for leakage. Remove the reservoir and depress the pistons using a wooden dowel. Remove the stop bolt, outlet plugs, and copper gaskets. Carefully remove the snap-ring and then remove the internal components from the cylinder bore. Inspect the bore for any damage. Replace all parts included in the rebuild kit, following the instructions provided. Lubricate all parts with clean brake fluid during assembly. Push the assembled components into the bore and install the stop bolt and snap ring. Before installing a new or rebuilt Brake Master Cylinder, it should be bench bled. Mount the Brake Master Cylinder in a vise and insert threaded plugs into the brake line outlet holes. Fill the reservoir with brake fluid and push the piston assembly into the Brake Master Cylinder bore to expel air. Repeat the procedure until only brake fluid is expelled from the brake line outlet holes. Alternatively, you can use your finger to cover the hole and prevent air from being drawn back into the Brake Master Cylinder. Install the Brake Master Cylinder over the studs on the power Brake Booster and tighten the mounting nuts. Thread the brake line fittings into the Brake Master Cylinder and completely tighten them. Fill the Brake Master Cylinder reservoir with fluid and bleed the Brake Master Cylinder and brake system if necessary. Test the operation of the brake system before using the vehicle normally.
