- Q: How to check and service front wheel bearings on Toyota Supra?A: This procedure is applicable to models from 1979 to 1986 only. The front wheel bearings should be checked whenever the vehicle is raised, and they may need servicing when the brake pads are changed. To begin, spin each wheel and check for noise, rolling resistance, and free play. If there is noticeable movement, the bearings should be checked and either repacked with grease or replaced if necessary. Remove the wheel(s) and use a wood block to separate the brake pads. Hang the brake caliper out of the way on a wire. Pry the grease cap out of the hub and remove the cotter pin and lock cap. Take off the adjusting nut and washer, then push the hub back onto the spindle to remove the outer wheel bearing. Pull the hub off the spindle and use a screwdriver to remove the grease seal from the rear of the hub. Remove the inner wheel bearing from the hub and clean all parts with solvent. Inspect the bearings and races for any damage or wear. Pack the bearings with high-temperature front wheel bearing grease and apply a thin coat of grease to the spindle. Place a small amount of grease behind each bearing race inside the hub. Install the inner bearing, followed by a new seal tapped into place with a hammer and block of wood. Carefully place the hub assembly onto the spindle and push the outer bearing into position. Install the washer and adjusting nut, tightening it slightly. Spin the hub to seat the bearings and check the torque of the nut. Loosen the nut and then tighten it as tight as possible by hand. Install the adjusting nut cap and a new cotter pin. Tap the dust cap into place with a hammer. Remove the wood spacer and install the brake caliper. Finally, install the tire/wheel assembly and tighten the lug nuts. Check the bearings by grasping the top and bottom of the tire, then lower the vehicle.
