Toyota Corolla Steering Wheel Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to remove and install the airbag module and steering wheel on Toyota Corolla?
A: To evacuate any airbag module, first spark the key then pull the connection wire from the battery's negative terminal for over 2 minutes. Next, pull the steering wheel so that the wheels are lined up and slightly release the Torx screws that fix the airbag to the steering wheel, while turning it until the airbag is released but the screws remain in the screw case. Slowly remove the airbag module from the steering wheel and remove the electrical connectors by lifting the clips using a small screwdriver, and then place the module in another area. If so provided, disconnect the electrical connector for the cruise control. Pop the steering shaft into place and loosen/Remove the steering wheel nut. To remove the steering wheel, use a puller to remove a nut that joins the steering wheel to the shaft; do not hammer or turn the steering shaft because this will knock the center of the airbag spiral cable. If still needed, to disconnect the airbag spiral cable, unplug the electrical connector and sever it from the combination switch. For installation, make sure the front wheels are straight and then press the lock tab of the spiral cable, now turn the Cable in anti-clockwise direction until you get to the inside marking and then turn the cable clockwise about 2 turns ½ until the pointers match. Put the mark on the hub of steering wheel on the other mark on the shaft, fit the wheel on the shaft, and then tighten the nut of the wheel to stipulated torque. Connect the cruise control connector back in and the electric connectors for the airbag module ensuring the locking tab is down. Last of all, ensure that the electrical connector of the air bag module is well positioned and that the wires are not pinched before snapping the module into its proper place and tightening the retaining screws; reconnect the negative terminal of the battery.
